After the Olympics wrapped up last week, the next large golf event was the St. Jude Invitational. Even before the event began there were heartfelt stories spreading around the PGA Tour.
Heartfelt Stories
The first began with Max Homa and a new fan favorite, Will Zalatoris. These two outstanding men sat down with children from St. Jude Hospital and worked with them to create customized golf shoes that the two would wear that week. This is one of the first times that this has been seen on the PGA Tour and the shoes turned out great.
They were special to each child and gave them hope. For those that do not know, St. Jude Hospital often hosts children who have rare diseases, and with that not much time left to live. Although it may seem like a miserable place, they do their best to keep each child as happy as possible until their last day.
Bryson DeChambeau Media Blunder
Back to the golf action, and although those two gentlemen were outstanding off the course this week, they did not do so well on it. Before the final scores were published, Bryson DeChambeau (as per usual) was grabbing headlines again for his actions. These actions were none other than skipping out on media sessions and refusing to answer any questions.
When you are as famous as that man, I imagine answering questions would take a toll on you after a while. I’m sure it doesn’t make it easier that most questions would be negative and making fun of him anyways.
Cameron Smith Record Tying Putting
The week was not all negative though, with Australian man Cameron Smith having more than just his hair to flaunt. This week he tied the PGA Tour record for fewest putts in a round with 18. If you take the average then you get one putt per hole, but you should also remember that 18 is the suggested number for nine holes.
Smith did not take the average way on this day that was anything but average. He had a few chip ins that helped bring his putting total down, and after his chipping at the Masters you can imagine he was pretty close for many of his putts.
Abraham Ancer Walks Away with his First Win
Although any golf tournament is special for many reasons, someone has to win at the end of the day. This lucky man was Abraham Ancer who went into a three man playoff only to come out with his first PGA Tour victory. He fought off Masters Champ Hideki Matsuyama and Sam Burns to win on their second playoff hole with a birdie.
Ancer has been close a handful of times, and he is such a nice guy that nobody was mad to see him win. We don’t expect this to be the last that we see of Abraham Ancer as we know he is just getting started. The PGA Tour is already off and running this week, so stay tuned for another recap coming your way soon!
